our origins
Otipêy is the short form of the Plains Cree word
Otipêmisiwak, meaning "those who own themselves."
Our name reflects why we do this work: to advance Indigenous economic self-determination and support Indigenous Peoples in shaping their own economies and well-being.
Our story began with Raven Outcomes and a clear goal: to prove that community-led and outcomes-driven finance could work for Indigenous peoples. It did.
As that work grew, communities and partners brought forward needs and opportunities that went beyond what a single fund or investment model could address.
Raven Outcomes grew into Otipêy to meet that need. Today, Otipêy brings multiple funds, asset classes and financial tools together under one Indigenous-led investment platform.

Why this work matters
Indigenous economic self-determination requires Indigenous Peoples to shape the decisions, investments and institutions that affect their economies and futures. Yet many existing financial structures were not designed for this.
Otipêy brings Indigenous leadership, knowledge and values to how funds are designed and managed. By working across borders, funds, sectors and asset classes, we can respond to more needs and opportunities while remaining grounded in our mission.

Indigenous leadership in finance.
For too long, capital was controlled by others. Otipêy flips that. We put Indigenous people in charge of the funds, the strategy, and the calls that matter. We build the next generation of Indigenous finance leaders. And we prove, in the open market, that Indigenous people belong at the top of this industry.

Impact measurement and accountability.
Integrity means every investment is effective, open, and accountable. We back results, not good intentions, and every dollar has to earn its return and its impact. We answer for how the money gets used. And we think in seven generations, not quarters.

Systems change, through Indigenous values.
Real change means reshaping the system, not working inside it. We challenge financial structures never built for Indigenous communities, and put Indigenous governance, knowledge, and priorities at the centre of how capital moves. And we build for the whole field to change, not to just fit in.

Prioritizing good relationships.
We collaborate with all kinds of partners, Indigenous or not. We build relationships that last, not one off deals. And we lead every partnership with respect, so everyone at the table comes out ahead.

Building for generations to come.
Money is a tool. We use it to build lasting value, and hold to Indigenous values while we do it. We are bold and we follow the evidence. And we plan generations ahead, so what we build now compounds for the ones who come after.

A shared commitment.
Otipêy and Otipêy Foundation
are sister organizations with distinct but complementary roles.
Otipêy designs and manages investment funds that advance Indigenous economic self-determination. Otipêy Foundation is a charitable organization focused on research, education, capacity building and community collaboration. It works with Indigenous communities to design, test and scale innovative solutions that strengthen Indigenous well-being and support long-term systems change.
Together, the organizations help move ideas from research and community-led development toward investment and lasting impact.
